7 Secrets and Tips You Should Know When Visiting Hongkong Disneyland

We just got home from Hong Kong and spent 2 days in Disneyland to celebrate my mom's birthday. There is no doubt that it is the happiest place on earth. I was crying while watching Mickey and the Wondrous Book show (tears of joy!) However, visiting Hongkong Disneyland is also one of the most tiring experiences I had in my whole life. Seriously, my feet are so tired that I could barely walk once we're back at the hotel.

Anyway, for those who are planning to visit, let me share some tips on how you can make the most out of your Disneyland experience.

1. Visit the City Hall

Don't forget to drop by the City Hall. It is located in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A., close to the Main Entrance to the park. They handle customer service concerns as well as provide assistance in dining reservations, currency exchange, and park information. There is also an ATM in case you need one.

For first time visitors, you can ask them for a First Time Visitor Badge. If it's your birthday, you can also get a special Birthday Badge from Disneyland.

2. Fastpass Service

Fastpass Service is a ticketing system that virtually “saves” your place in the queue for some of your favorite attractions. This allows you to enjoy the park and then come back to the attraction during the return time printed on your FASTPASS Ticket. This is absolutely free though not all attractions have it.

Currently, it is available for Hyperspace Mountain, The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh and Iron Man Experience.

3. Use Coupons for Discounted Meals
Don't forget to get a free copy of the Hong Kong 20th Anniversary Coupon Booklet to enjoy deals around the city. This is available at the Hong Kong International Airport Visitor Centre and in selected hotels and inns in the city. Use the Disneyland coupon and get 20% off from meals. These are accepted in all dining outlets at the park.

4. Prepare Your Rain Gear
It was raining during our 2-day visit but that did not stop us from enjoying the park. Though there are rain ponchos for sale (approximately HK$ 55), it would be cheaper and more practical to bring your own rain poncho which is cheaper if bought outside.

5. Shop at Professor Porter's Trading Posts
Most shops sell identical items but one should not miss the chance to shop at Professor Porter's where you can score great deals and sale items. Can you imagine getting discounts from 50-70% off when you buy 2 or 4 items?

I was able to get Mickey Mouse shoes for only HK$50 (regular price of HK$ 298) and shirts at 70% off. I got a couple of Star Wars shirts for Val at HK$60 each instead of the regular price of HK$ 198.

6. Skip the line at the Disneyland Railroad

One should not miss taking the Disneyland Railroad to get a complete tour around the park. This is the first attraction you will see when entering the park making it really crowded in the morning. Thus, it is suggested that you take the ride in the afternoon or instead, board from the Fantasyland station rather at the Main Street.

7. Purchase Discounted Disneyland Tickets

Get your Disneyland tickets at a discounted rate from Klook. One day pass is available for only HK$ 540 (Original Price is HK$ 589) Plus, Klook coupons also allow you to proceed directly to the entrance and skip the long queue.

How about you? Do you have something to share about your Hongkong Disneyland experience? Feel free to comment below.

Bacolod's Freelancers Hub: Dojo 8 Coliving Space

Coworking spaces are very important to freelancers like me. If you are not so sure what I am talking about, a coworking space is a place with a shared working environment like an office or something like a study area at home. The only difference is that the people using it are usually not employed by the same company or organization.

Though there are a lot of variations in terms of the ambiance or atmosphere, a strong and fast internet connection, as well as a reliable generator (in case of power outages), are constant in coworking spaces.

I was still in Manila when I started using coworking spaces. There is no doubt that the availability of these work areas has saved me every time there are power outages or internet failure and I cannot afford to miss work. Thus, when we moved to Bacolod, it was one of the things I looked for ASAP.

Luckily, we were able to find Dojo 8 Coworking Spaces. It is located at Lacson Street, Bacolod near Starbucks Lacson. The place is very accessible and rates are really cheap. Not to mention they offer unlimited coffee. Then earlier this year, they opened their second branch at the back of Bar 21 named Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces.  By the way, this is not a sponsored post.

Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces is not your typical coworking space. So, let me share with you the top 5 things why it is so popular among freelancers and students.

1. Overnight Accommodation - Dojo 8 have rooms available in case you need to stay overnight. They are very spacious, clean and affordable. It is also very ideal for travelers who still need to work and can't really rely on their hotel's wifi service. My friends from Dumaguete stayed at Dojo 8 for quite a number of times and they love it.

2. Location - They are located in the heart of Bacolod City. As mentioned, they are at the back of Bar 21, a restaurant that provides a fusion of Filipino delicacies combined with Italian and American favorites (You can read about our Bar 21 Review here) and Bob's Cafe just across the street. There is also a Japanese restaurant a few steps away.

3. Recreational  Facilities and Fun Environment - Dojo 8 provides ping pong tables and other outdoor games. They also have the garden area and some chairs outside which means that you have options on where you want to stay. You're not just limited to an air-conditioned room sitting on a chair.

4. Pet-Friendly - As a fur parent, this meant a lot to me. At Dojo 8, you can work while your dogs play on the lawn. No need to leave our furbabies alone at home. Thus, I am looking forward to bring Crumpy, Cheesecake, and Cinderella soon. (I am thinking if we would be allowed to visit together or there is a limit on the number of dogs one can bring.)

5. Events - Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces is now central to freelancer events here in Bacolod. They hold both free and paid seminars and workshops. Last January 2016, they had the HOW TO START A HOME-BASED CAREER SEMINAR organized by The Purple Secretary and last May 12, the Freelancer Meet-up organized by the Digital Career Advocates of the Philippines.

And aside from all of these, I love working at Dojo 8 because you get to be surrounded by like-minded people who want to be productive.

So, don't forget to follow Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces on Facebook for event updates and promotions. How about you? Do you have your own favorite freelancer spot?

Random Thoughts about staying AHEAD in Life: Schools and the Future

I am here at Bacolod - Silay International Airport waiting for my flight. If you are wondering where I am going, I am flying back to Cebu again to spend more time with my family. This is actually my 3rd trip to the Queen of the South within a month and I am very thankful that my current job allows me to travel anytime I want.

For the past few weeks, Val and I are working on one of our passion projects. Since we have been very blessed, it's about time that we pay it forward. We want to help graduating students find their dream jobs. As we were discussing on how to address the gap that hinders them from having gainful employment, we found out that there are actually several factors affecting their success.

Based on a study conducted by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), graduates of the top 3 educational institutions in the Philippines are hired faster and paid more by employers.

Most corporate recruiters and HR professionals will deny this but this is actually the hard truth. According to one of my favorite bloggers, Tina Perez of www.mrswise.tk, "We are living in a third-world country. And whether we like it or not, where our children graduated from matters a lot." (You can read more about her blog post, here.)

Luckily, I studied at Ateneo from kindergarten to college. So, based on my personal experience, finding a job was quite easy. I got invited to more interviews and got hired faster. Though HR professionals or recruiters won't really say it, I believe that my school has something to do with it and it was one of my advantages. I remember too when I applied to one of the biggest consumer brands here in the country, we were filling out an online application form and there was a dropdown of the list of schools. If you can't find your school on the list, you have no way to proceed with your application. We believed that was their discreet way of shortlisting applicants. When I was working as an online recruiter, I have clients who preferred and prioritized the graduates of the "big" schools for an interview.

I realized that education is a huge investment but worth it. It is the best gift of a parent to his or her children. (So, Papa and Mama - if you are reading this, THANK YOU!)

However, have you thought about what happens if one fails their college entrance exam? How will it affect a person's life? I had a friend who had the money but unfortunately, did not pass the exam in Ateneo. Thus, he was forced to enroll in another school. This detour has definitely changed the next 4 years or more of his life.

Not getting in the "big" school does not necessarily mean doomsday. However, this means that at this crucial point of their lives, right before college, we should readily support our child's future by ensuring that they get accepted in a reputable school. Why take the risk when we can give them more? Enrolling them in a review center is one of the things that we can do for them.

Based on my research, one of the leading and most awarded tutorial and review center in the country is AHEAD TUTORIAL AND REVIEW. They are the first to offer Test-Based Reviews for the country’s most competitive admission exams, namely the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT), the Ateneo College Entrance Test (ACET), and the De La Salle University College Entrance Test (DLSUCET). They have been in the business since 1995 and have several branches in Metro Manila as well as in Baguio and Tuguegarao.

AHEAD TUTORIAL AND REVIEW take pride in their learning programs where students not only prepare for academic excellence, they have also come to embrace their role as future leaders of the global community.

Their services include the following:
  • Review Programs - These are designed to help students get into the university of their dreams. Their programs help students focus on their lessons, guide them towards topics to be studied, provide them with the right reference materials, and motivate them to study harder.
  • Tutorial Programs - These are one-on-one and small-group tutorial programs where students get undivided attention and care. Students are assigned tutors who match their personality and requirements. With the right support, children become all that they can possibly be.
  • Online Programs - AHEAD Tutorial & Review Center has developed an online learning platform designed to help learners work through their everyday academic concerns. Through AHEAD Online, students can review for their exams, finish their homework, and study their lessons in advance in the comfort of their own home. Students will have one-on-one reviews with expert tutors through video-conferencing platforms in a clear and seamless manner. This is actually my favorite among their offerings.
What I like about this center is that they have very good feedback from their students plus, their online programs is one of a kind. Making you maximize the sessions without being affected by external factors like traffic which will either get you so tired or lazy.

Anyway, I will be boarding the plane in a bit. Just share your thoughts in the comments section below. If you have more questions, you may email AHEAD directly at info@ahead.edu.ph or call them at (02) 426-0034 to 36 or 0917-89 (AHEAD) 24323.

My wife was rushed to the hospital... because of her brassiere

I know that it is unusual for a guy to blog about brassieres but this experience is very important and worth sharing in order to help women avoid the same health concern that my wife had a few months ago.

It was in early February when Clarice started complaining about chest pain. This would last for 2-3 days then the pain would disappear. After a few weeks, she would experience again the pain in her chest and on her shoulders and there are also instances where she has difficulty breathing.

Fearing that it is something serious and a possibility of a heart attack, we rushed her to the hospital where she underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG) and some other laboratory tests to find out if her heart is working normally. However, her cardiologist said that all tests are normal.

Then, her doctor noticed some red marks under her bust line. Her doctor suspected that the chest pains were due to an ill-fitting bra. Then, my wife remembered that, yes it is possible that her brassiere was the culprit of her health concern. The chest pains started about the same time she got the new set of brassieres. She was then asked to stop using these bras and observe if the condition persists.

So, guess what --- no more chest pains!

We realized that it is very important for women to wear a comfortable bra. Other health effects and risks of wearing the wrong brassiere are:

1. Skin Problems - these can cause scarring or blisters underneath or along the bust line.

2. Bad Body Posture - this may consequently lead to back, shoulder and neck pain.

3. Lymph Node Problems - too much pressure from tight-fitting bras can close lymph valves and vessels.

4. Sagging Breasts - the lack of support spoils the size and shape of the breasts making them heavier that can lead to sagging.

So, where can you get a comfortable bra but with adequate support?

According to my wife, wireless bras are needed for those who have bigger cup sizes since it requires more support. In her case, she needed to avoid using wired bras thus, she was in a dilemma on where to get some comfortable ones but with adequate support.

Finally, she found one or let's say I found one for her!

Last February 15, I got an email from Sample Room PH* and they are introducing Uniqlo Wireless Beauty Bra. Its description in the email got my attention "Beauty Soft Wireless Bra stands out as it has no clips, hooks, wires or stress while retaining its sufficient support." Since it has limited samples available, I immediately grabbed a sample for her.

Uniqlo Wireless Bras are true to its promise. Here's a message from Clarice after trying the Uniqlo Beauty Soft Wireless Bra.

Choosing the right bra is not all about looking for fancy ones. Lace, net, and underwires are very tempting but women and men who are getting their ladies some lingerie must keep in mind that it is far more important to choose comfortable ones because women deserve to feel limitless.

If you have more questions about the bra, feel free to message Clarice and not me for obvious reasons (haha!) on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mymetrolifestyle

Top 6 Dog Movies You Shouldn't Miss

Every furparent would love to watch a dog film until the part where the dog dies. No matter how much we tell ourselves it's not true and just a fictional story, we all end up crying a bucket of tears. As they say, it is better for humans to die in the movie as long as the dog survives. Do you agree? (I'm so bad.)

This Sunday, Crumpy, Cheesecake, and Cinderelly would like to share the top 5 dog movies you shouldn't miss.

1. Marley and Me - Newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan played by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston moved to Florida, where they are starting their life as a married couple. Then, the Grogans decide to adopt Marley, an adorable yellow Labrador pup. But Marley soon grows up to be a mischievous and naughty dog. Despite all the adventures, Marley still manages to bring out the best in John, Jenny and their growing family.

2. 8 Below - In the frozen wasteland of Antarctica features a tale about the bonds of friendship and loyalty. Three members of a scientific expedition, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker), his friend Cooper (Jason Biggs) and an American geologist (Bruce Greenwood), must leave their beloved sled dogs behind after a devastating accident and increasingly perilous weather conditions. The dogs struggle to survive on their own during the harsh Antarctic winter.

3. Hachi: A Dog's Tale - A college professor played by Richard Gere finds a dog on a train station and forms a lasting bond with him. (This is a personal favorite and this is based on a true story.)

4. Max - A highly trained service dog (Max) was too traumatized to remain in service after his handler U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott was killed in Afghanistan. He was instead adopted by Kyle's family back in the U.S. Kyle's teenage brother Justin (Josh Wiggins) has problems of his own and doesn't want the animal. However, Max may be Justin's only chance to learn what really happened to his brother. Justin and Max begin to bond and set out to unravel and find out more about the mystery of Kyle's death.

5. Legally Blonde 2- Yes! You read that right. It is not purely a dog movie but this movie about Elle Woods (played by Resse Witherspoon) is about her journey to Washington, D.C., to have her say about animal rights, but is ignored by every politician she encounters and quickly learns that the White House can be even tougher to navigate than the Ivy League. It is a great reminder to all of us to be the voice for all our dogs and other animals.

6. A Dog's Purpose - This 2017 movie is all about finding the meaning of a dog's existence in the lives of its humans. It is a story about the unbreakable bond between his dog and owner as they find each other again after multiple reincarnations. This movie will give us hope to the reunited once again with our lost angels.

Some of these movies have really sad endings but still, they are worth watching. Just like having a dog, we all know that due to their short lifespan, owning one will lead to a major heartbreak. However, an opportunity to be with them no matter how short it is definitely worth the pain.

Ending this post with my favorite quote from Anatole France, "Until you have loved an animal, a part one's soul remains unawakened."

[NATIONWIDE] Where can you donate your old clothes?

Did you know that you can donate your old clothes to H&M?

H&M Philippines encourages customers to bring and donate their old clothes (whether in good or bad condition) in exchange for store discount vouchers. This is their way of helping lessen the garbage brought about by the fashion industry. After all, fashion is too precious to end up in the landfills.

How to donate?

There is no minimum number of pieces. You just have to fill a paper bag with old clothing (no matter what brand or condition) and bring to any H&M store nationwide.

However, please take note that there is a limit of only 2 vouchers per customer per day regardless of how much clothes you are donating. (Approximately one bag full of clothes is equal to one 15% discount voucher)

If you are curious what does H&M does with these donated clothes, these old garments are collected by their partner, I:Collect. These are then sorted into three categories:

  • Rewear – old clothes that are still in good condition and can be resold.
  • Reuse – old clothes and textiles that can be reused and turned into other materials like cleaning cloths.
  • Recycle – everything else is turned into textile fibers, and used for things like insulation.
The proceeds are donated to H&M Foundation and split between social projects and recycling projects. Also, for every kilogram of garment collected, I:Collect donates 0.02 euros UNICEF Philippines. You can read more about it here

So, what are you waiting for? It's about time we all get stylish yet responsible Filipino citizens. Whether you are from Manila, Cebu, Davao or Bacolod, you can now donate your old clothes to any H&M branch in the Philippines.

UPDATE: I just donated another bag last August 17, 2018. So, for those who are asking -- yes, this is still ongoing. Also, here's the voucher that they are giving away.

Be Limitless with SvelT’i

In this day and age where technology has inevitably become a part of our daily lives, we are subconsciously living limitlessly with almost everything readily available at the tip of our fingers. It has led to so many discoveries, better establishments, and better luxuries and has dramatically changed our daily lives. From the way we communicate to speedy internet connection, from the academe to various industries, and from healthcare to aesthetics. Even in aesthetics and especially in the field of beauty, technology has been a huge driving force behind their huge improvements.

For the past two years, SvelT’i has been creating sweeping possibilities that unlock the customers’ health and beauty potentials while satisfying their needs and demands. To keep up with the changing times and as a way to say ‘Thank you’ for the customers’ continued trust, SvelT’i now offers a new set of services that aim to further defy the limits that constrict an individual’s health and attractiveness. Starting April, the clinic has been offering the latest techniques in minimally invasive treatments- from botox, dermal fillers, non-surgical nose lifts (HIKO), platelet-rich plasma (vampire facelift), mesotherapy, sclerotherapy, to thread lift.

BOTOX
Botox is a neuromodulator that blocks the signal from the nerve to muscle, preventing the muscles to contract, hence preventing dynamic wrinkles to appear and worsen. When frown, forehead, bunny lines and crow’s feet are smoothened, an overall vitality is observed in the face.

DERMAL FILLERS
Filler injections are used to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, shape facial contours and add to volume loss to aging face. It is used to heighten the nose, transform tired looking sunken under eyes to a fresher look, rejuvenate or make the lips plumper, add volume to the cheeks and even augment the chin to make it more proportion to the face.

Filler injection is a lunchtime procedure which gives an instant result.

HIKO
HIKO is a non-surgical noselift procedure that enhances the feature of the nose. It is an extremely popular procedure which gives the nose more definitive structure and lifts the nose tip. This involves inserting threads into the nose bridge and the tip. Combining nose threads and nose fillers will give you long lasting, higher and sharper nose creating the nose you've always wanted with minimal downtime.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) / VAMPIRE FACELIFT
The platelet-rich plasma or vampire facelift includes drawing blood from the patient, separating the platelets then injecting it back into the skin.  The platelets are high in growth factor that helps stimulate the skin to regenerate and aid in cell turnover, making it look youthful and vibrant. This procedure can be done not just on the face but on other aging parts of the body like the neck and hands. It also aids in addressing hair loss or thinning.

MESOTHERAPY
This procedure employs multiple injections of fat-burning products and plant extracts into the subcutaneous fat. It targets localized and stubborn fats that are hard to eliminate even with exercise. This procedure has been performed all over the globe for over fifty years because of its effectiveness. Other indication for the use of mesotherapy aside from weight loss is cellulite.

Mesotherapy combined with SvelT’i's world-class slimming lasers produces faster and superior results.

SCLEROTHERAPY
Spider veins that hinder the flaunting of smooth and toned leg scan are treated with sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is used to treat blood vessels like spider veins and smaller varicose veins. A sclerosing solution is injected into the unwanted veins which causes them to shrink and dissolve over a period of weeks as the body naturally absorbs the treated vein. Sclerotherapy in combination with SvelT’i's Laser Vein treatment makes a recurrence of unsightly veins less likely.

THREAD LIFTING
Thread lifting is a popular, non-invasive procedure that aims to reduce deep lines, facial folds, and sagging in the most natural way. These treatments are used mainly on the face but can also be applied on the neck and other body areas. SvelT’i is offering two types of thread lifting: V lift and Beauty thread.

These procedures can stimulate the production of collagen the protein which gives our skin the youthful glow, causing tightness in the area. All types of threads tighten the surrounding tissues and increase blood supply resulting in a healthier and tighter looking skin making you look five to ten years younger. Now, who would’ve thought that a nonsurgical thread lift can give youthful longevity?

These minimally invasive treatments together with the existing noninvasive procedures of SvelT’i assures the client that he or she can be transformed into a younger and better-looking person with no surgery and minimal downtime. And with this kind of technology, it’s absolutely possible to take a few years off the face with lesser expense and pain, unlike surgery.

Living limitless begins with a choice and everyone has that choice. The choice to live a life without bounds. The choice to be a better and beautiful you! With all these new offerings from SvelT’i, there are no restrictions, no stopping points, and nothing will hold a person back from making herself feel well and look beautiful.

To know more about SvelT’i, you may inquire at (02)332-7546 / 09188-SVELTI (783584) or visit the clinic at 5F South Insula Condominium #61 Timog Avenue, Quezon City from Mondays to Fridays from 9am-6pm and Saturdays from 8am-1pm. Road Trip: Manila to Bacolod

Last May 12, 2015, Val and I relocated  to Bacolod to say goodbye to the crazy pollution, endless traffic and fast-paced Metro Manila life. It was a big decision to let go of our jobs as well as the great opportunities that we have. Not to mention that we'll be missing our friends and loved ones. But hey, we are so ready to take our married life to the next level and get ready for a new adventure!

Our whole new adventure starts with our "epic" journey. It is the longest land trip I have ever taken. Normally, it should take you 18-20 hours however, we had a lot of stops thus, ours was a bit longer.

We left around 12:30am bound for Batangas via SLEX and Star Tollways. We wanted to leave a bit late to avoid the traffic in EDSA since we're from way up North. We arrived at the Batangas port around 4:00am but we were late for the RORO trip and waited for the next one at 5am. While waiting, we just decided to have some breakfast.

We left Batangas port around 5:30am bound for Calapan, Mindoro. It was actually the best time to travel since we are in the middle of sea during sunrise, Watching the sun rise was a liberating experience as it marked the beginning of our new adventure.

Even Crumpy enjoyed the trip since you can feel the wind brushing against your skin.

We arrived at Calapan Port around 8:30am and we are up for another 3-hour drive going to Roxas City port. This is our first time in this place and honestly, do not have any idea where to go. Our game plan was just follow the signs (which was sufficient and very helpful) plus our handy google maps. The road condition is good. Kudos for the nautical highway project!

We passed several small towns and stopped for drinks and gas along the way.

We reached Roxas City port around 11:30am but unfortunately, the next RORO bound for Caticlan will leave by 3:30pm. I guess that means we have ample time to rest and eat before the next trip. Since we barely know the place, we opted to have lunch at Andok's (a known company in Metro Manila) and we had a simple rice and bbq meal. Andok's is just very near the port. The sun was scorching hot that we felt uneasy. So, Val and I decided to use the port's shower room for Php 20.00/head.

Our trip from Roxas to Caticlan was quite long (approximately 5 hours) via Montenegro Shipping Lines. We were already tired and sleepy but had no place to really rest. Val and I decided to stay on the upper most part of the ship.

We are were also very lucky to see the beautiful sunset on the later part of the trip.

We arrived in Caticlan around 8:30pm and we decided to stay overnight there. Unfortunately, all hotels and inn are fully booked because of the APEC Summit and we did not have any reservations. We tried to ask a few locals for suggestions and they recommended that we travel all the way to Kalibo proper to get a room.

It took as approximately 2 hours to get to Kalibo. The roads are too dark and no light posts available. There wasn't any signage on the road (unlike the ones in Mindoro.) On the brighter side, there were checkpoints and PNP outposts every 1 km because of the APEC Summit. So, at least we were able to ask directions every now and then.

You would know that you've reach Kalibo once you pass by the famous Kalibo bridge. Unfortunately, I was so tired and it was dark that we weren't able to take pictures. We were lucky enough to find a pet friendly inn immediately during the night. I made a separate review of the inn, here.

Around 10pm the next day, we decided to continue the drive going to Dumangas port. It is best to travel during the day because the roads are quite confusing with all the turns and no signages. You'll be able pass by Capiz before you reach Iloilo. We actually had lunch in Capiz since there's a Mang Inasal and Deco's in Mambusao proper.

We reached Dumangas port around 3PM and did not expect the problem getting into the RORO. Apparently, one of the ships of Montenegro broke down and Tristar would need a reservation a day before. Our only chance is a no-show of passengers with reservation.

We spent the afternoon chatting with other travelers and I can say we had made friends along the way. We learned that some of them have been there for a week but can't get their trucks on board because it's fully booked. Just like us, they are on the wait list. Being on the wait list, not only means "first come first served" but they are also considering the size of your vehicle. We got lucky and got on board around 8:00pm and then finally, arrived in Bacolod around 11:30pm.
