Reflections About The Earth Hour

Earth Hour celebrations took place last March 28 in twenty-four different timezones across the world. This is done with the ultimate purpose of creating a sustainable world.  A simple hour of turning off the non-essential lights can help the environment especially now that we are confronted with climate change.

A few days before the celebration, I was in search of a perfect picture related to the said event. During the search, we decided to visit a sky park in Quezon City. I came to realize that 80% of people nowadays equate leisure time with the use of their mobile phones and gadgets.

Both young and old are busy with their phones. Some are busy texting or calling. Others are playing games while some are busy taking selfies or groupfies. Looking at them, made me feel that we had more fun growing up because there were more personal interactions. I enjoyed so much going out of the house to run, bike, walk, feel the wind and play with my friends and cousins. Issues of low battery or no WIFI connection were not part of my concerns.

I believe that we can have a more sustainable world if we can change our lifestyle. By being able to let go of our gadgets, save on energy and manage to have fun with a decrease use of technology. I have observed that there was more laughter and happiness with certain groups and individuals without the use of technology.

We should always remember that Earth Hour is a symbol of our commitment to our dearest planet. I hope that our efforts will be beyond that 60 minutes. After all, it is not yet to late to save our environment. This would be the best gift we can give to the next generation.
