Facebook Messenger Rooms is now available in the Philippines

With the lifestyle changes happening due to the pandemic, more and more people are now shifting to work-at-home arrangement and digital platforms. Most of the meetings and webinars are now done online thus, it's no surprise that Facebook comes up with something to address this need.

Thus, after a few weeks of waiting, Messenger Rooms is now available here in the Philippines. This latest feature is a new way to hang out with your friends, employees, teammates or clients on video chat.

Create and share a link, and anyone can join, even if they don't have a Facebook account.

The best part about this is that Messenger Rooms lets you host up to 50 people with no time limits. This is a nice alternative to Zoom's free plan of which has a limit of 40 minutes only.

Just like other video conference app, you also have the ability to share your screen which is important during presentations.

Anyway, since this is relatively new. We'll continue using it for a more comprehensive review. Until then, have fun with the "room."

Here's a quick guide on how to use it:

1. Open the Messenger app.
2. Tap the People tab at the bottom right of the screen.
3. Tap Create a Room, and select the people who you want to join.
4. To share a room with people who don't have a Facebook account, you can share the link with them.

REVIEW: Vikings Luxury Buffet Delivery and Take Out - Eat like a Viking at Home

The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely changed our way of life. With most of us shifting to working at home, online shopping and home delivery services, businesses have become more creative and innovative in their business model and service delivery.  This includes our favorite buffet restaurant - VIKINGS LUXURY BUFFET.

Thus, for my birthday, we decided the have a Vikings buffet at home for a minimum booking of 5 persons at Php 500 per head*.

However, we got an extra Php500 discount for our booking (continue reading below to find out how) and got all of these for Php 2,000 only :)

*Rate per head vary per branch. NCR, Cebu and Davao branches is at Php 600 per head.

To create your own buffet, just pick from the menu:
  • Two (2) appetizers
  • Two (2) salads
  • Three (3) rice and vegetables
  • Five (5) main courses
  • Two (2) desserts
  • Two (2) drinks - one juice and one soda
And here's what we got. :)

For appetizers:

Assorted Maki and Sushi

Ebi and Vegetable Tempura
For salads:

Potato Salad

Macaroni Salad

For rice and vegetables

Shanghai Fried Rice

Mashed Potatoes

Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables
For dessert

Blueberry Cheesecake

5 pcs revel bars that are so delicious (highly recommended!)
For main dishes

Main Course Platter - Pork Humba De Cebu, Roasted Chuck Eye with Roasted Peppercorn Sauce, Chicken Parmigiana and Seared Salmon in Risotto Style Potatoes and Corn

Chinese Noodles

Food choices vary per branch so, you might have to check their respective Facebook pages for an updated menu. :)

How was the experience?

We are happy with the food. Both the potato and macaroni salads are in generous servings as well as the Chinese noodles which I think can serve 6-8 persons. The seared salmon was a big chunk and it was delicious making it "sulit" :)

The roasted chuck eye steak was around 9 slices which may not be enough if you are a steak-lover. Also, since they included mixed vegetables as a side dish of the main courses then, you can consider ordering something else for "rice and vegetable."

They also included drinks in the package. So, we got cucumber agua fresca and 1 bottle of Pepsi. So, everything was complete for our small party and we did not have to prepare anything else. :)

Birthday Promo

Now, the best part? Vikings continues to make our celebrations special with us by extending the 4+1 birthday promo. Since it was my birthday yesterday, we only paid for 4 pax and thus, got an additional discount of Php 500. :)

They even sent their signature cake with a candle.

Thank you, Vikings SM Bacolod. :)

If you are interested to also have Vikings at home, this is now available in their different branches nationwide. Just message them on their Facebook page for reservation and booking. :)

"Quaranthings" to do in the time of ECQ

The saying “so much to do, so little time” was once a cliché we could all relate to. But these days, such seems to be inapplicable, for most of us are at home due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). With more time on our hands now, we ask, what more can we do to stay productive?

If there’s anything we are learning from our current reality during this time, it is that we can now do what we’ve always wanted to accomplish in the comforts of our home—be it baking, cooking, gardening, and other hobbies we had no time to learn before. Interested?

Here are some activities you may want to try to make the most out of the ECQ period:

1. Cooking - Why don’t you try whipping up something in the kitchen using ingredients you never thought would work before—like the famous, easy 7-up chicken marinade or challenge yourself to cook a perfectly seared steak or experimenting on preparing the Dalgona in various versions—from coffee to fruity flavors—that are making the rounds on the internet? Now is the best time to sharpen your culinary skills; then by the time the quarantine is over, you may gather your friends for a dinner at home and serve them your best recipe discoveries yet.

Baking - While you’re at it, why don’t you try baking sweet treats to brighten someone’s day, too? You can start with the basic ones—from baking cookies, then banana bread, to probably advancing to cakes; that is when you’re confident enough with your weighing and measuring skills. Yes, bake it ’til you make it.

3. Arts & Crafts - While garbage collection may be a problem these days, recycling and upcycling wastes at home are highly recommended. Turn them into something useful.such as the tissue roll carton as a cable wire organizer, PET bottles as a case for your pencil or art tools, cans as flower vases, etc. You can make pencil cases for your kids, new jars for your room, and even toys for your kids, among other creative ways to reuse them. There are even free online classes that you may join to unleash your artistic side, as well as free music lessons, to boot.

4. Reading - Want an escape but can’t go out because of the virus? Let must-read fiction and non-fiction—be it hard copies or eBooks—take you to places and settings you’ve never seen before. Books help your brain withdraw from anxiety-inducing news on your social media feeds. You can do light reading with food books or to feel some love while on quarantine, there are romance novels. Do read up on travel and create that itinerary of your biggest adventure yet once this quarantine is over.

5. Work it out - In these uncertain times, it is best to sweat the stress out, not only to stay healthy but to also keep the happy hormones going. No gym equipment? No problem. There are still a lot of exercises you may do using ordinary items or fixtures at home. Need weights? Use PET bottles as DIY dumbbell; need elevation for your cardio exercise, use the stairs; or if you need to run but has no space, do high-knee, stationary run or jog. For Zumba or Yoga classes, there’s always YouTube.

6. Gardening - We’ve also seen more people trying to grow their own urban garden at home in their effort to be more sustainable these days. You might have come across Facebook and Instagram posts by your friends showing off the progress of their mini farm and hydroponic techniques using recyclable bottles.

A lot of beverage companies are receiving requests from non-government organizations for donations of PET and other plastic bottles, too, as they will use them as pots for their plants to create sustainable farms for the communities they are serving.

“We have received several requests for plastic bottle donations from various groups for urban farming projects. And as a company that champions sustainable practices, we are more than willing to help them create a greener world,” said Frederick Ong, President and CEO of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc.

“Other than our frontliners, our environmental advocates are to be considered heroes also, because what they are doing is for the long-term. And we are here to support their causes,” he added. And if there’s something we are realizing during the quarantine period, it is that the earth seems to be healing, because of less human activities outside our homes. Most of us are realizing the grim effects of not taking care of the environment. And this pandemic is teaching us to nourish Mother Nature more for us to enjoy healthier years. More than ever, it is high time to learn how to remain productive, while taking care of the environment. It is clear that we are breathing cleaner air and seeing clearer skies these days. And let’s all do our job to keep it this way to save more lives and for the benefit of generations to come.

But if you opt to do nothing during this quarantine period, there’s no problem with that, too.

Remember: The most productive people also make time doing nothing for self-care and a balanced life.

How To Keep Hydrated

Everybody is just posting and shouting out in their social media accounts how hot it is nowadays. According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index registered as high as 43 degrees last May 6 and 52.2 last May 8.

In this case, we need to be careful since extreme heat can cause heatstroke, heat cramps as well as heat exhaustion. We are also advised to stay indoors, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and the most important, keep hydrated.

Tips on How To Keep Hydrated:

1. Drinking-Water - This is the most basic and easiest way to hydration. It is recommended that we drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. It is ideal to opt for purified instead of distilled water since the purified water still contains minerals that are essential in rehydration while distilled water has both the contaminants and minerals removed.

It also helps if we keep our water cold since this is more palatable which can encourage us to drink more. Thus, if you are planning to buy a refrigerator, this is the best time to do it and start having cold or chilled drinks.

2. Coconut Water - Coconut water is known to be high in potassium. It also contains other important minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and manganese. These essential minerals are important in rehydration and replenishment of lost electrolytes and minerals.

3. Oral Rehydration Solution - According to Wikipedia, oral rehydration is a type of fluid replacement used to prevent and treat dehydration. It involves drinking water with modest amounts of sugar and salts specifically sodium and potassium. This usually comes in the form of sachet that you can buy over-the-counter in pharmacies and simply mix it with water. They also have flavored pre-mixed oral rehydration solutions that are usually given to children.

4. Fruits and Vegetables - Aside from drinking liquids, we can also stay hydrated by eating fruits and vegetables. Many of our favorites are actually composed of 80-90% water. Some of which include: watermelons, carrots, lettuce, berries, oranges, cabbage, spinach, and grapes.

Aside from eating them fresh, you can also consider making a smoothie or "shake" as fondly called here in the Philippines. Watermelon and carrot flavored smoothies are our favorites and this will surely quench your thirst and help you lower down your body temperature.

So, stock up on your fruits and vegetables as they have lots of health benefits for the whole family. It is also helpful if you store them properly like keeping it inside the refrigerator and freezer since this can help prolong its shelf life. Experts also advise that freezing fruits and vegetables can also help retain their nutrient content than just keeping them on the table.

No wonder refrigerators and freezers are considered very important nowadays. We can consider it as an investment to keep our family healthy. If you are thinking of getting a new one, check out the best prices on refrigerators

Nonetheless, no matter what hydration option we choose, we just have to ensure that we make up for the lost fluids from sweating more during this hot or humid weather.
