Top 5 Things To Do During Rainy Days

Val and I love the rain. It actually means more time to spend together. If it is really not that important, we actually cancel our plans of going out and simply just stay at home. Personally, I consider the rain as a blessing from God especially after I saw how much it meant to the farmers during El NiƱo.

Thus, we came up with a list of top 5 things to do at home when it's raining.

1. Movie Marathon or Binge Watching - This may be the most popular thing to do when it's raining. Whether you decide to watch a movie or catch up with your missed TV series, just make sure to have popcorn ready.

2. Get More Sleep - Don't miss the chance to get your much deserved rest. This bed weather is a perfect timing for you get more sleep. Make sure to have at least 8 hours. :)

3. Give Yourself a DIY Pampering Session - Whether it's hot oil, deep conditioning, own mani-pedicure session, or simply cutting your nails, take this opportunity to take care of yourself. A DIY pampering session is the one of the greatest ways to express self-love.

4. Hobby Time - With our fast-paced lifestyle, we may often forget our little passions such as writing, drawing, crafting or singing. Do what you love most, find the time to pursue your passion.

5. Keep Yourself Warm - It may be raining outside but it's not enough reason to get cold. Make sure to keep yourself warm by enjoying MAS Soup Sarap

It's so easy to prepare. You just have to add hot water and you'll be able to enjoy a creamy and delicious soup in less than one minute. It is available in 3 flavors: Chicken and Corn, Seafood and Mushroom. MAS Soup Sarap is available in all leading supermarkets and 7/11 stores nationwide.

How about you? Do you have other ideas on what to do during a rainy day? Feel free to share your thoughts below.

ManilaMed’s Cancer Care Center

Cancer is one the most dreaded diseases and can mean the end of the world for patients including their families. However, this should not be the case because there is still hope against "The Big C." Early detection of cancer can make a difference and increase the chance of successful treatment.

According to the World Health Organization, recognizing possible warning signs of cancer and taking prompt action can lead to early diagnosis. Thus, it is very important that the first step which is screening and diagnosis must be made by an expert. Access to sufficient facilities is also very crucial. After all, there is no room for errors and every minute counts.

Thus, learning about ManilaMed’s Cancer Care Center provides the peace of mind that there is a place which delivers compassionate patient care with the best outcome. They help patients #feelbetter during unfortunate and trying times.

In this section, evaluation of cancer treatment also includes Mammography, Computed Tomography Scanning (CT-Scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine Imaging, Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry, and Endoscopy.

For patients who require surgery, the Specialized Surgical Procedure Surgery section is the most essential. This section prioritizes surgeries under Breast-conserving, Sphincter-Preserving and Laparoscopic Colorectal.

The Cancer Care Center also offers Radiation Oncology. Under this are various types of effective, high-tech treatments such as: Computerized Treatment Planning, 2D Conventional Radiotherapy, 3D Conformed Radiotherapy and Intensity-Modulated.

Family as a Gift Conference is Happening on June 16 at SMX Moa

FAMILY IS A GIFT Conference is happening on June 16, 2018, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

This whole day event aims to showcase the gift of the family, its dignity, and high calling, recognize the challenges families go through today, provide tools that will help couples and families confront these challenges in the form of workshops/breakout sessions and exhort families to work together and persevere in building strong, Christ-centered families that will build a strong, Christ-centered society.

The discussion will feature the following topics:

Part 1: Family Is a Gift

1. The family is a gift.
  • Children are born from an act of mutual self-gift; the family is the first environment where we are received as a gift and where we become a gift to another.
  • Being a gift is being in communion. The marriage of husband and wife is the symbol of the communion of the Trinity and the communion of Christ and the Church. Through their mutual self-gift and life-giving union, children are born.

2. The family is called to be a gift to others outside of it, to other families and to those in need of a family’s love, by being a light that reveals God’s plan for humanity. In a world surrounded by so much darkness, the family is called to shine Christ’s light of truth and hope amidst:
  • Secularism – God has been removed from how we live our lives
  • Relativism – each one dictates his own truth and morality
  • A technological culture that threatens genuine communion and leads to isolation

3. As families we don’t just exist for ourselves; we don’t secure the welfare only of our own children. We exist in a community of families that interact and depend on one other; the weakness of one part affects the whole body.

4. Strong families begin with strong marriages.
  • Marriage is where husband and wife make a total gift of self to each other and become fruitful.
  • Strong marriages allow the light of the family to shine more brightly as it illuminates the way for the children and the future generations, and for other families around it.

Speaker: Fr. Joel Jason, Commissioner on Family and Life, Archdiocese of Manila. Professor of Fundamental Moral Theology, Sexuality and Integrity, Bioethics, and Special Moral Theology at San Carlos Seminary. Parish priest at the Mary Mirror of Justice Parish in Comembo, Makati.

Part 2: Strong Marriages, Strong Families

  • Strong families do not just happen. They require hard work, time, and a solid sense of connectedness between spouses.

Speaker: Lissy Ann Puno, counseling psychologist and Certified Imago Relationship Therapist in private practice in Singapore where she is the co-founder of the International Counseling and Psychology Centre; has 25 years of experience working on psychological health and wellness in the US, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and now Singapore; author of “Affairs Don’t Just Happen” a book on protecting marriages and long-term relationships; workshop presenter for the “Getting the Love You Want” couples workshop.

Part 3: Family: A Light in the Darkness

5. The family is threatened but not helpless. As families, we will not allow the darkness to overwhelm us and extinguish our light.
  • Parents need to take charge of the future and welfare of their families while also working to help other families.
  • Parents and children need to be equipped with practical, relevant ways to work together to address issues that beset them and the culture in which they live.
  • Families working together create a bigger, brighter light that will reveal and bring to the reality God’s plan for His children.

6. Strong, Christ-centered families together build a strong, Christ-centered society.

Speaker: Bro. Melo Villaroman, CFC Chairman; Operating Vice-President, United Laboratories

Registration fee is at Php500, but if you sign up before June 10, 2018, you only have to pay Php350. For more details, visit http://familyisagift.com/family-is-a-gift-conference/

App Review: PERA SWIPE

It has been a week since I have downloaded the latest popular app, Pera Swipe. If you have no idea what I am talking about. Pera Swipe is an efficient all-in-one lock screen platform for Filipino smartphone users where they reward users with points that can be redeemed for mobile load and other prizes. You can read more about it here.

Some may say that Pera Swipe seems too good to be true but it is actually a win-win solution for both users and advertisers. A definite innovation in digital marketing that is easy, rewarding and actually helpful.

Like last Monday, we were thinking what to buy for dinner and was having a hard time deciding. Thanks to Pera Swipe, I saw their post and we got ourselves lechon manok from Andoks. Pera Swipe shows its users relevant and useful ads.

However the ads are not the best thing about it. Instead, the points that can be redeemed for rewards is the main reason why you should download the app.

And there are several ways to earn points aside from swiping. Based on my experience, I was able to earn 1,200+ points in 3-days enough to get me a Php 10 prepaid load. Thus, I can say that getting rewards is very attainable. Just remember to always check the EVENTS Tab in order to participate in different promotions to earn additional points.

--------------------------------------

Here are some questions raised by other readers about Pera Swipe.

1. How do they earn from it?

This is not confirmed but I believe Pera Swipe earns through product advertisements shown through the app.

2. Does it load up your phone with unnecessary stuff?

The good news is it doesn't load your phone with unnecessary stuff. I did not notice any changes to the performance of my device.

3. How long has the app been around?

The app’s grand opening was last June 1, 2017 but it has been around a couple of months before. It is now on its version 2.0

4. Can I still use this app even if I am a postpaid user?

Yes, definitely. Aside from prepaid load, you can also redeem Sodexo Mobile Passes that you can use for shopping and dining.

5. How was the redemption process?

The redemption process is easy but is on a limited schedule. Prepaid load can only be redeemed from 9AM-9PM.

Sodexo Mobile Pass are redeemed manually. You just have to fill out a google form. Redemption cut-off is every Tuesday (11:59PM) and codes will be sent by Friday. These are delivered to the mobile number and email address provided during the redemption process.

Also, here are my other observations about Pera Swipe.

  • You need internet connection to use it.
  • It does not work on rooted devices.
So, what are you waiting for? Download now at https://goo.gl/KnFjgL and sign-up using this referral code: mymetrolifestyle and get 500 points instantly!

Update: You can now get 555 bonus points if you use the code: mymetrolifestyle

Road Trip: Bacolod to Cebu

I was so surprised to discover that traveling from Bacolod to Cebu by land is very easy. We were used to flying so, it was only last Mother's Day weekend that I decided to give it a try.

Our route was Bacolod to San Carlos Port (by land), San Carlos to Toledo (via RORO or water taxi) and Toledo to Cebu (by land.)

If you plan to bring your own car, the fastest route going to San Carlos Port is through the via Don Salvador Benedicto highway. Travel time is approximately 2.5 hours though you might be interested in spending a few hours in the area to enjoy it. You may read about our short Don Salvador Benedicto adventure, here

If you plan to take the Ceres bus going to Cebu, then you have two options:

A. Take a direct trip (BCD - Cebu)

This means that you don't have to transfer buses and purchase your RORO ticket separately. However, travel time is longer since they take the slower RORO. Estimated travel time by direct trip is 7-8 hours.

Here is the schedule: (subject to change without notice)

1:30 AM
4:00 AM
6:45 AM
9:30 AM
12:00 NN
2:30 PM
9:30 PM

Fare: Php 505.00 and if you have questions, here is the contact number of the Ceres South Bus Terminal - (034) 4329427 / 09177711212

B. Take separate trips

1. Take the bus from Bacolod to San Carlos via Don Salvador Benedicto
Travel time is 2.5 hours
Fare: Php 144.00

They have buses leaving every few minutes. We took this option since we did not make it to the 12NN BCD-CEB direct trip. When choosing this option, inform the driver or conductor that you will be going to the pier. Once you reach San Carlos, they will be dropping you at the tricycle terminal.

Take a tricycle going to the Port and ask the driver to drop you at the Fastcat or RORO ticketing office. Fare is only Php 20.00

2. Ride a water taxi or Fast Cat from San Carlos Port to Toledo Port

There are also several options traveling from San Carlos to Toledo. I highly suggest you take the Fast Cat. (This is not a sponsored post.) It is not your usual "fastcraft" that can only accommodate passengers but cars and motorcycles can take the Fast Cat too. It is new, clean and fast. Travel time is only 1 hour.

Rates start at Php 150 for Economy, Php 200 for Premium Economy (Airconditioned) and Php 250 for the Business Class. I took the Business Class since it's cooler, not so crowded and it comes with a free light snack.

Senior Citizens and children are entitled to discounts and those below 3 years old are free of charge. If you are bringing your car, an SUV/ AUV will cost you Php 1,535.00 while a sedan's rate is Php 1,139.00.

For a complete schedule of trips, you may visit Fast Cat's website.

Also, don't forget to pay the terminal fee is Php 20.00 per passenger.

Additional Tip: If you plan to just leave your car in San Carlos Port, the overnight parking fee is only Php 34.00.

UPDATED on 10/28/17: Due to change in San Carlos Port's Management, overnight parking is no longer allowed.

3. Ride a passenger van from Toledo - Cebu City

Once you reach Toledo port, take a tricycle going to the bus or v-hire terminal for Php 10.00. Since most of the buses are non-aircon, I highly suggest that you take a passenger van. Fare is only Php 100.00 per person and travel time is 1.5 hours - 2 hours only.

Additional Tip: Mcdonalds is just walking distance from Toledo port in case you're hungry.

If you plan your trip carefully and minimize wait time, you can reach Cebu in 6 hours. It actually has a very minimal difference if you travel by plane. Since BCD-Silay Airport takes 1 hour, the pre-departure wait time is 2 hours, flying time is 1 hour and Mactan Airport to Cebu City takes 1.5-2 hours due to traffic.

Do you have any other questions? Feel free to comment below or send us a message at Facebook.

The Correct Way to Get Wildlife Out of Your Home

Since humans interact with homes every day, they can quickly find the exits when necessary. Wildlife, on the other hand, can be confused by the sounds and smells indoors to the point where some don’t recognize an open door when you give it to them. There are also situations where wildlife removal is difficult because the creatures simply want to stay in this warm place with plenty of food. Here are some things to avoid and some to do when you have an unwanted guest.

Do Open Doors and Windows

Even though some wildlife will not recognize the exits you're offering, it is often better to have them than not. Certain rodents, once they feel trapped, may lash out at anything that moves. Once you've called an exterminator in Houston, TX, ask for other recommendations until arrival.

Don't Trust Old Folk Remedies

It can seem tempting to use plants, candles or other remedies to "urge" wildlife to leave your home, but most of these are better at preventing them from getting inside in the first place. You are better off trusting a professional to advise you that "old wives."

Do Check Local Laws

In some states, a permit is required to remove wildlife from a home or the surrounding areas. There are also laws against releasing wildlife on government property. Snakes, in particular, sometimes have laws against even releasing them in your neighborhood as they are legally classified as a nuisance. Another note is bees usually require relocation instead of destruction.

Don't Go In Blind

Just because you have a cat does not mean you are ready to tackle a raccoon and toss it outside. Wildlife extraction should never be attempted by a novice. Even if you have experience with wild critters, it is a good idea to do some research before attempting anything risky.

Do Move Your Pets to a Safe Space

Wildlife that gets indoors might try to attack a domestic cat, dog, bird or other pet. It's a good idea to move your pet somewhere safe with a door you can close. Large pets or ones that feel a need to be involved in everything might balk at this imprisonment, but it prevents possible injury.

Handling wildlife removal is something best left to professionals. These tips can help protect you, your family and pets while you wait for someone more qualified for the job. A qualified exterminator can also tell you about any laws regarding your particular pest.
