Pandemic Mentally Hurts Many Healthcare Workers, but Help is Available

Although COVID-19 cases are dropping in the country and advances in technology are making regular patient consultations possible, many local healthcare professionals still find working under pandemic conditions overwhelming.

Teleconsultations that last until late evening and being away from loved ones for extended periods are just some of the issues that continue to drain them to this point.

The webinar "Kumusta Dok — The Afterlife: Emerging After COVID" has provided healthcare professionals a way to identify and manage symptoms of burnout and achieve that balance of taking care of their patients and their well-being.

"Going through stressful life experiences can be unhealthy because this could lead to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, which we have commonly seen since the pandemic started," webinar speaker Dr. Robert Buenaventura said.

"If you show symptoms of burnout, it's a good idea to see a mental health professional. You have to realize that help is available."

Dr. Buenaventura is the head of the Department of Neurosciences at Manila Theological College and associate professor in human life span and psychiatry at La Consolacion University Philippines.

Kumusta Dok is an initiative that aims to empower patients to reconnect with their doctors during the new normal. The Kumusta Dok initiative also gives tips and updates on the channels available for patients to strengthen partnerships with doctors throughout the health-seeking journey. It shares efforts being made by healthcare facilities to ensure the safety of patients and healthcare staff while delivering appropriate care. It likewise partners with medical societies to create educational and wellness platforms for healthcare professionals as we live through this pandemic.

Based on a study, conducted during the height of the pandemic, out of 516 healthcare workers in the Philippines, 70.7% have anxiety symptoms. The study revealed that the pandemic had a psychological impact on the majority of healthcare workers.

According to Dr. Buenaventura, red flags to watch out for indicating too much stress or a mental health condition include a change in moods, memory, and behavior, as well as lower productivity and frequent absenteeism. Those who suffer mental burnout also have a tendency to withdraw from social connections and ignore personal self-care and hygiene.

To manage these symptoms and get a proper diagnosis or treatment plan, Dr. Buenaventura suggests seeking the help of a mental health professional who can be reached via teleconsultation or in-person visits. Another way to contact a mental health professional or a trained counselor is via anonymous, 24/7 hotlines.

"Consultations don't necessarily have to be about a mental disorder,” Dr. Buenaventura added. "It can just be about the stress that can be managed by other means. But you need to identify and accept that the problem exists because that is the first step to doing something about it."

Those who are not receptive to meeting a mental health professional can instead engage in doing stress management techniques to cope with burnout symptoms. Their options include exercise, adopting a healthy diet, or getting enough sleep.

They can also try other therapeutic maneuvers such as meditation or mindfulness, correcting negative thoughts, or progressive muscle relaxation.

"Self-care is very crucial because it's an integral part of professional fulfillment," Dr. Buenaventura said.

Life After the ' Hopefully Gone' Pandemic: Tips on Surviving the Aftermath of a Global Crisis

March 1, 2022, is a day full of hope for many Filipinos. After battling the pandemic for almost two years, the government is finally lowering the quarantine restrictions down to Alert Level 1 for many parts of the country.

Though our lives will never be the same, the pandemic has taught us many lessons. 

As someone who tries to see everything through the lens of gratitude, I realized that there are also good things that happened due to this health crisis. The so-called digital revolution transformation process was been fast-tracked as most people were forced to transition to online and digital means. STI to continue 2nd semester with remote learning and online OJT

This health crisis has created the biggest disruption of the educational system in the history of humankind affecting students and learners globally. 

Despite this unfortunate situation, we are happy to share how schools are able to adjust and still maintain high-quality education despite the challenges posed by the health crisis. 

STI to continue 2nd semester with remote learning and online OJT

To ensure students get high-quality instruction in the new normal, STI will continue with its ONline and ONsite Education at STI (ONE STI) Learning Model for its second semester, which will officially begin on February 14, 2022. 

Launched during School Year 2020-2021, the ONE STI Learning Model aims to achieve the desired learning outcome for students by combining online tools with limited onsite or on-campus hands-on training. 

STI will also offer online on-the-job training (OJT) in the upcoming semester, an alternative medium for trainees to develop soft skills and apply what they have learned in school without the need to be physically present at the job location. Trainee-employer engagement will be done via a range of digital resources such as email, chat platforms, videocon, and webinars, among others. 

Following the mandate of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on OJTs during the pandemic, the virtual OJT provides students with work-related opportunities without compromising their health and safety.  

Positive feedback from partners 

STI's 3rd year BA in Communication and Bachelor of Multimedia Arts students were the first batch who underwent the virtual OJT when it piloted last summer of SY 2020-2021.

The communications and multimedia companies that partnered with STI only had positive feedback about the program. Pioneer trainees of the online OJT were able to get onboard in these companies with the help of their OJT advisers.

"Although the threat of COVID-19 is still out there, the online OJT allowed me to gain skills — such as creativity, teamwork, and adaptability — that would empower me to handle various real-world situations and to succeed in my future career," Jessa Jaos of STI College – Cubao, a former online OJT trainee said.

Gwyneth Nuez of STI College Ortigas-Cainta, another former OJT online trainee, expressed gratitude to STI because it found a way for students to undergo valuable job training amidst the restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Because of the virtual OJT, I can say that my education at STI is complete,” she said.

 

As you can see, making real-life education is possible and now more accessible. 

Students and transferees looking to enroll at STI for the second semester can receive a holistic and fulfilling learning experience at a reduced cost by applying for the institution’s financial aid programs such as the Pag-IBIG-STI Educational Assistance Program and GSIS-STI Educational Assistance Program.
