The Ultimate Checklist: Essential Factors to Consider for Back-to-School Laptops

Home Credit is key when shopping for sulit devices to gear up for the next school year

In today's technology-driven world, gadgets like laptops have become essential tools in empowering students in their education. From college to grade school, students now rely on these devices to research information, access digital learning materials, complete assignments, and activities, and even communicate with teachers and classmates.

This reality calls for a reliable and efficient partner that every student can use in their day-to-day needs, such as a versatile laptop that can multitask and handle demanding applications for school tasks. However, during this back-to-school season, parents and students have various options to choose from.

The good thing is that Home Credit, a leading consumer finance company, is here to guide you on your quest to find the perfect device for the upcoming school year. From features for usability to budget, here are the ‘wais’ things you should look for before purchasing a laptop.

Check its performance for everyday tasks

A laptop’s performance can affect a student’s overall productivity. Lags or slow response times can interfere with a student’s ability to work efficiently on school activities, assignments, and projects at a given time. For that reason, it is vital to have a high-performance or reliable laptop that can provide a smooth multitasking experience.

Check if the device has a powerful processor and at least 8GB of RAM for better performance. Additionally, ensure it has the latest operating system for compatibility with modern applications and a good graphics card if school tasks require various editing software and more. Such features are built in a wide range of laptops, including Acer Aspire Vero Work Laptop, Asus TUF Gaming F15 Laptop, and Apple MacBook Air Gold 8GB RAM/256GB.

Ensure bigger storage for files, applications

Storage is a vital feature to consider when looking for a laptop this upcoming academic year. Having a sizable storage will give a student enough space to store different files, such as research papers, learning materials, and more. It can also provide considerable storage for educational applications and software with larger sizes. With that in mind, make sure to get a laptop built with at least 500GB to 1TB of ROM to not worry about running out of capacity, such as the Huawei Matebook D15 i5 11th Gen, HP 15S Work Laptop, and ASUS Vivobook 15.

Assess its battery, design for portability

For students, the battery is a crucial factor for a laptop. Power outlets are not always available for the next recharge whenever they are outside the house or on campus. With long-lasting battery power, students can take their laptops anytime and anywhere and use the device for an extended period to work on their school tasks. Look for a laptop equipped with a battery that has the power to last for more than eight hours. For instance, there are the Acer Aspire 3 i3 and the HP 15S i3 Silver Laptop for a reliable study partner.

Additionally, a laptop’s weight and dimensions impact its portability. Because students sometimes bring their laptops to school, a heavier or bulkier device may not be ideal as it might strain their shoulders and backs. That is why always consider a lighter and slimmer design like the Realme Book i3 Work Laptop for a handy device.

Make sure it adheres to the budget

If there is already an established budget for the laptop, stick to it to avoid overspending. As there are various options available out there, it is appropriate to first compare the specs and prices before buying. Choose the one that is affordable and has the specs that can meet a student’s needs, and do not forget to take advantage of on-sale laptops to save money.

Philippine Veterans Bank Gears Up for the 1st Historic Victory Day Bike Ride in Baguio Honoring WWII Veterans

Baguio City will witness a momentous event that blends history and sportsmanship. The inaugural Victory Day Ride spearheaded by the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) slated on September 3, 2023, will take cycling enthusiasts and history aficionados on a journey to honor the sacrifices of World War II veterans and raise awareness about Baguio Victory Day.

Mike Villa-Real, PVB first vice president for marketing and communications, said “the enactment of R.A. 11216 in 2018, marks September 3rd of each year as a special working holiday, marking Yamashita’s surrender and Victory Day in the Philippines. This day in 1945 is clearly a significant historical event marking the success and along with it, the toil and sacrifices, of the soldiers of both the United States and the Philippines. However, it is not as well-known as the “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) commemorated April 9 each year.”

Organized in partnership with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), City Government of Baguio, Wartime Heritage Guild Philippines (WHG), Without Limits, Salgado PR, this ride aims to foster a deeper understanding of the city's significant role during WWII while encouraging active participation in the sport of cyclists of all ages and backgrounds.

Inspired by the annual Ride for Valor that retraces the infamous Death March, the Victory Day Bike Ride takes a different route, focusing on the historical sites and landmarks associated with Baguio City's role in World War II. Cyclists and participants will embark on a 44.5 kilometer route that meanders through the city's picturesque landscapes and historical spots, providing a unique opportunity to relive the past and honor the heroes who fought valiantly for freedom.

While the Ride for Valor primarily focuses on the Death March, the Victory Day Bike Ride aims to balance the narrative by shedding light on the broader scope of World War II history in the Philippines. The Victory Day Bike Ride seeks to increase awareness about Baguio City's role during the war. The event intends to give due recognition to the countless Filipino and American soldiers who fought for the country’s liberation.

The Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) invites sports and cycling enthusiasts to join the Ride for Victory Day, a bike-for-a-cause event that aims to raise funds for the maintenance of the country’s historical markers and other World War 2 heritage sites.

The ride is open to fully vaccinated cyclists and all types of bikes with brakes. Villa-Real said participants may ride at their own pace, and will also implement a "No Helmet, No Ride" policy to ensure the safety of the participants.

Villa-Real also said a mechanic will be available to help those who encounter mechanical difficulties, while roving marshals will be present to keep track of the riders' progress. Support vehicles are allowed, but riders should only ride in the vehicle if they choose to drop out of the event.

The non-competitive bike ride will have 5 pitstops: Start at Baguio City Hall, First Stop, Camp Allen, Second Stop, USAFIP-NL Marker, Third Stop, Sablan View Deck, Fourth Stop, Fort Del Pilr (Philippine Military Academy), Fifth and Final Stop, US Embassy in Camp John Hay.
The registration fee for the Ride for Victory Day is P600, which includes an official event shirt, a race bib and passport, a loot bag, a post-ride meal, and a commemorative medal.

Interested individuals may register online at https://bit.ly/victorydayride-regform while groups may email rideforvalor@gmail.com until September 1.

PVB is a private, commercial bank owned by World War 2 veterans and their families. With its new Charter signed into law, the Bank's ownership now includes Post War Veterans and AFP Retirees.

For more information about the event, follow Victory Day Ride on Facebook.

5 Common Business Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Did you know that 90% of businesses online fail in just 4 months?

Yes, you read that right! It's sad but it's true.

So, if you are a business owner or if you are aspiring to be one, then let us share with you the Top 5 Common Business Mistakes and Tips on How to Fix Them:

1. Unable to Establish a Niche or FocusThe online world can be overwhelming. With the endless possibilities and opportunities, one may also fall into the trap of being all over the place which in return, makes the brand easily lose its identity.

It is important for brands to establish a niche or identify their area of focus in that way, people can easily remember and recall the brand when doing significant consumer decisions.

TIP: When starting a business, ask the big questions because your answers can help you identify your niche.

  • What is the purpose of my business?
  • What problems am I trying to solve?
  • What gaps in the market am I trying to fill in?

2. Targeting a Broad and Large Market - As great as it sounds, targeting a broad and large market might not be the most efficient way to spend your time and your marketing budget. We have to understand that not everyone can be our customers. The market is so diverse with varying needs, interests, and purchasing power.

TIP: Know your target audience. Identify consumers who are likely to buy your products and services, and customize your digital marketing strategies to use to engage them.  Do not over-stretch your budget just because you want to reach everyone.

3. Failing to Establish Online Presence - Whether we admit it or not, digital and online marketing is the way to go. According to a recent study by GE Capital Retail Bank, 81% of retail shoppers conduct online research first before making a purchase.

Thus, by failing to establish your online presence, you set your business NOT being considered in a consumer purchasing decision.

TIP: Maximize the use of social media platforms like Facebook, IG, Tiktok, Linkedin, etc.

4. Not Having a Blog - Many businesses build their company websites but miss out on the huge opportunity and benefits of including a blog. As business owners, we have to keep in mind that the goal is not simply to put up a business but rather to become an industry leader.

By keeping an updated blog and publishing relevant articles, you market yourself and your brand as an expert in your industry. Not to mention your blog posts can get indexed which also helps in the SEO of your website.

5. Unable to Maximize Online Resources - We just talked about creating a blog and yes, we know that content creation may be a bit challenging for some. However, it is not a sufficient excuse that you don't do it.

If you don't have a blog because writing is not your forte, or you tend to avoid social media because you don't know how to create posters or edit videos, then you are making the biggest mistake in running your business. There are so many available online resources available now that can help you with your content writing or graphic design needs.

There is even a database of all the popular tools for digital marketing that you can use so, you don't have to search all over. These tools are user-friendly making it possible even for non-tech-savvy individuals to harness the benefits of using these online resources.

Indeed, running a business is not easy however, by avoiding these simple mistakes we can increase our chance of success by being focused, creative and resourceful.

A Home that Cares: Home Credit Extends HMO Coverage to Domestic Partners to Strengthen Inclusivity Efforts

As Home Credit Philippines (HCPH) continues to foster inclusivity and support diverse families in the workplace, the leading consumer finance company now includes domestic partners as dependent in its medical benefits program for eligible employees.

Home Credit Philippines Chief People Officer Alpha Omega Aquino noted that this new policy is aligned with the company’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of its employees.

“With this initiative, we hope to create an environment where every employee feels supported and valued. We want to help promote a caring and nurturing work culture that feels like home to empower our employees further,” said Aquino.

With this new policy, qualified employees can now extend their HMO coverage to their domestic partners if they meet certain criteria. The employee and domestic partner should be both single and never married and not related by blood, whether legitimate or illegitimate. The partner must also be of legal age and not more than 65 years old.

If eligible, the employee can enroll the partner by submitting the following requirements for the medical benefits program: barangay certification of co-habitation, the partner’s Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) certified copy of birth certificate, and PSA certificate of no marriage (CENOMAR).

“By extending our medical benefits program to domestic partners, we aim to enable our employees to build strong and healthy families, regardless of marital status. The coverage will encompass inpatient and even outpatient services, including checkups, laboratory tests, rehab, therapy, emergency care, dental, mental health care, and pre-existing conditions,” Aquino added.

As a strong advocate of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), this initiative complements the Same-Sex Partner HMO Coverage that Home Credit started to offer its employees in 2021 to provide medical benefits to LGBTQIA+ partners. Currently, the company already has several employees enjoying this benefit.

“At Home Credit, we believe that our employees are our greatest asset. We remain committed to fostering a workplace that promotes DEI, allowing us to embrace different perspectives and backgrounds to make every employee feel welcome and appreciated. We will continue enhancing our programs for our employees as we believe our success will not be possible without them,” Aquino remarked.

As a testament to Home Credit’s commitment to upholding DEI practice, the company recently received another Gold Stevie® for the Innovative Achievement for Diversity and Inclusion category during the tenth annual Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards last June.

Book Feature: Mga Sulat na Para Sana Sa 'Yo + Exclusive Interview with Author Vanessa Cruz-Zapanta

Regret is one of the hardest emotions to deal with. It is more difficult because of the other negative emotions connected to it such as remorse, sadness, guilt, and the feeling of helplessness. Unfortunately, this happens to many of us. It happens to people from various walks of life and for varied reasons.

These are the things we should have done or the words that we wished we said. These are the feelings that we never got to show or express. Maybe because the circumstances were not favorable or maybe we got so busy and got caught with the daily grind.

Perhaps we made unfortunate and bad decisions or many times we just don't know how to express ourselves and we simply can't find the right words to say.

Mga Sulat na Para Sana Sa'Yo (MSPSY) is a collection of letters in English and Tagalog left unsent. In this book, the author has given a voice to the people with stories of regret. She wrote letters for them that they could or would have given to their intended recipient.

Even if these letters may be forever unsent because of certain circumstances like death or lost contact, the author hopes that putting their feelings into words and being able to read them can somehow give closure.

This book can also help us process our thoughts and feelings for ourselves. It also reminds us that one is not alone. It shows us that there is someone out there who has felt exactly the same love, pain, and regret that we have. Just like how we find songs relatable.

This 144-page masterpiece is written by Vanessa Cruz-Zapanta, NBDB registered author and writer from Bulacan. She is a Psychology graduate from the University of Santo Tomas and has a certification in interior design from New Zealand.

She is a former psychometrician and a sales professional in one of the oldest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Today, we are grateful for this chance to have this exclusive interview with her.

1. Can you share with us something about the book that isn't in the blurb?

No matter how much you have accomplished in life, there are grueling moments in one’s life that can make you quit. But during those falls, it is important to try to stand up and face life head-on. The struggles that we are going through will pass, it will pass out like a kidney stone, but it will.

Also, I am happy to share that MSPSY became LAZADA's top-selling literature and had been recognized as part of the trending and frequently bought books in literature. The book also received recognitions such as Filipino Reader's Choice Award (Top 4) and has been nominated and garnered the highest number of FB votes during the VP Choice Awards.

2. What inspired the idea for your latest book?

I wrote my book and self-published it to tick it off my bucket list initially. I didn’t realize that a lot of people will be able to relate to it. The stories in the letters were real to them and it hit the right spot.

Also, I wanted a title that will intrigue and pique the readers' interest and I think the book became as popular as it is because of the title. Many are drawn to the dramatic and the romantic, I guess.

3. How long did it take you to complete the book?

It took me a year to finish writing, MSPSY.

4. What part of the book was most challenging to write and why?

The most challenging part was looking for the right person to edit the book. I even experienced being rejected but it was part of the process in which I learned. Starting to publish as well as finding the right team to help you are the hardest. It is a lot of hard work.

5. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

It is never too late to do something that takes your breath away. It is always imperative that we learn to be brave and say what we want before it is too late.

When I write, I am able to inspire people and instill the attitude of gratitude whatever your present circumstance is to people. This is what happened to my book, MGA SULAT NA PARA SANA SA ‘YO. The English and Filipino letters that I wrote gave closure to most people that read them and many were able to relate to the different situations.

6. If you’re planning a sequel or writing the next book, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

There is a clamor for BOOK 2. But we’ll see. I will always be guided by my True North. I live it up to Him. "Unsent" or "Letter You Should Have Received" - Another book of letters like MSPSY

7. Where can they buy your books or find out more about you?

The book is now available online via

If you are near Manila, it is also available at the Solidaridad Bookshop located at 531 Padre Faura, Ermita.

It is also available on Google Play or you can order directly from me. You may reach me on my official accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, and Youtube

---------------------------

Thank you, Author Vanessa, for agreeing to this interview. We are happy to get to know you and your book and we look forward to more stories (a.k.a. letters) from you.

We love supporting authors! Do you want your book to be featured?

The Truth Behind Misconceptions on Generic Medicine

When it comes to therapeutics, Filipinos have many misconceptions surrounding generic medicines. According to a survey, more than 70% of Filipino respondents prefer branded medicines while only 15% prefer generic drugs. This study also found that only 7% of the participants know the correct definition of “generic drug” and almost half or 48% believe that generic medicines are less effective than branded medicines.

A homegrown heritage brand and a pioneer in the generics industry, RHEA Generics’ goal has been to empower Filipinos to prioritize their health and wellness within their means. Furthermore, the company advocates the use of relatively affordable medicines that could help Filipinos prevent illnesses or boost their immunity as much as branded medicines could.

With this, here are some of the top misconceptions about generic medicines debunked by RHEA Generics:

THE MYTH: Generic medicines are not as effective as branded medicine

The TRUTH: Generic medicines are as effective as branded medicines because both use the same active ingredient. The Philippine Law on Generics also known as the Generics Acts of 1988 defines active ingredients as the chemical component of medicines that is responsible for the therapeutic effect of any pharmaceutical product thus, emphasizing that the composition of both generic and branded products are equally potent and efficient.

THE MYTH: Generic Medicines are not safe

The TRUTH: Through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all medicines, whether it is branded or generic, go through a series of inspections and approval processes, usually taking around 60 days up to six months, to assure that these drugs are safe and of the highest quality.

Likewise, the FDA regularly ensures that pharmaceutical products and establishments in the market comply with high-quality standards with good manufacturing practices. Through the post-marketing surveillance, FDA inspects drug establishments verifying that all products are FDA-registered and safe for consumption.

As a trusted Filipino medicine brand, RHEA Generics also goes through the same rigorous process to assure that all medicines distributed are safe and of world-class quality.

THE MYTH: Generic Medicines are sold at a low price because it is low-quality

The TRUTH: Generic medicines are cheaper since these drugs are distributed without patent protection making them much cheaper than branded medicines. Patent protection provides an exclusive right for the distribution of a certain product. This simply means that generic drugs are based on a developed branded medicine whose patent protection rights have expired thus, cutting a huge cost in developing and marketing new medicines.

In a report by the Department of Health, it was revealed that 99% of Filipinos refuse to buy their prescription medicines because of their expensive price with 71% allotting less than P1,000 for their monthly medical supplies.

With the goal to help Filipinos attain affordable healthcare, RHEA Generics provides world-class quality and safe health products.

RHEA Generics has partnered with some of the world’s best pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Viatris, Sanofi, GSK, Otsuka, Merck, Fresenius Kabi, AstraZeneca, OEP, Lundbeck and Boehringer Ingelheim to assure world-class-quality medical products for every Filipino.

There are many other misconceptions about generic medicines that we still believe today but we definitely can’t risk our health because of it. When in doubt, we encourage you to seek medical professional health to ensure proper diagnosis and medication.

To know more and purchase RHEA Generics medicines, visit the nearest Mercury Drug store near you.

Tip #1: Envision Your Space

When decorating a space, it is essential to start with an end goal in mind. Determine the style and atmosphere you want to create in each room and plan accordingly. This will help you avoid unnecessary expenses and give you a clear direction for your project. Consider consulting with friends, family, or researching online for inspiration and ideas.

Pro Tip: Create a draft floor plan to visualize the placement of furniture and identify potential activities for each area.

Tip #2: Set a Budget

To stay on track financially, set a budget for each room or item you plan to redecorate. This will prevent overspending and encourage resourcefulness in finding creative, cost-effective solutions. Consider repurposing or creating your own decorative items to add a personal touch to your space.

Pro Tip: Allocate an ideal budget for different purchases, whether it's large furniture pieces or smaller decorative items bought in bulk.

Tip #3: Re-Place or Replace

Since redecorating also means shifting furniture and replacing old ones, plan or list down all the items in the space you want to move around or replace for a newer one. Take note of worn-out pieces that may require refurbishing or replacement. Consider donating old furniture to give it a new life while benefiting others.

Pro Tip: Remember, one person's trash can be another person's treasure. Donate furniture items you no longer need to charity organizations or individuals in need.

Tip #4: Scout for Items

This step can be considered the most enjoyable! Shop and canvas for good products. Look for affordable yet trusted brands that align with your budget. Consider versatile items that serve multiple purposes, allowing you to optimize space and functionality.

Pro Tip: Maximize space and functionality by opting for convertible or foldable furniture. For example, the Uratex Monoblock Louis Folding Table and Chairs can be used for both indoor and outdoors– a great deal for a multi-purpose space-saving item!

Tip #5: Look at the quality and check safety labels

When purchasing new furniture, prioritize longevity, durability, and versatility. Carefully examine the production materials, testing processes, and certifications associated with the items you're interested in. Look for indicators of durability and quality, such as caution stickers or certifications.

Pro Tip: Check for caution stickers, like the ones found on Uratex Monoblock Sofie Chairs and Classic 101 Chairs. These chairs are not only affordable and available in trendy colors but also come with a sticker that proves their durability.

Tip #6: Design Freely

With your chosen items in hand, it's time to bring your vision to life. Begin by decluttering loose items such as small decorations, electrical devices, books, and miscellaneous objects. Then, rearrange existing furniture to accommodate new additions. Finally, place the new furniture in its designated spots and reintegrate the items you wish to keep in the room.

Rex Education’s ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon Continuum’ recognized at UNODC Conference as an exemplary school-community-family program for strengthening drug-abuse prevention

During the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference recently, at Novotel Manila, Quezon City, Rex Education bared its ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon (BPE) Continuum’ for strengthening drug-abuse prevention.

UNODC’s Conference gathered organizations, policymakers, and prevention implementers for discussions on addressing drug-related problems in the country. Under the theme “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”, UNODC encouraged individuals and groups to share drug-abuse prevention responses that are health-centered and based on family intervention. The agenda tackled the healthcare system, evidence-based programs, and Philippine experiences in family-centered interventions.

During the 3rd day of the event, REX was among the government and non-government organizations who shared their experiences with prevention programming, as well as the impact and influence of these initiatives.

Taking a whole school approach to reform initiatives

BPE officially launched during the January 2021 Annual Educators' Congress, where 400 private and public schools expressed interest and intent in pilot implementing the framework.
In March 2021, pilot implementation for BPE began with 13 schools completing one implementation cycle. These schools were Marantha Christian Academy, St. Edward School, Canossa Academy Calamba, Ednas School, Cherished Moments School, Colegio de Santa Rita de San Carlos, Inc., Cabulay High School, San Andres Elementary School, Divisoria High School, Rosario National High School, Sagana National High School, Patul National High School, and Sinili Integrated School.

REX gave life to the portmanteau ‘Edukampyon’, a combination of the words edukasyon (education) and kampyon (champion) to mean champions of education. The BPE program is grounded in the Edukampyon advocacy: To engage duty-bearers and build their capacities for respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the right to quality education.

Pursuant to BEDP 2030, REX advocates a whole-school approach that entails the collaboration of all members in a school community. The whole school approach recognizes that the informal curriculum is just as valuable as the formal one, highlighting the importance of providing learners with inclusive and safe environments beyond the classroom. This framework is meant to advance agendas on global education and reform initiatives such as health awareness, eradication of violence, and drug abuse prevention.

The whole school approach also comes into play in promoting the six facets of the Filipino whole learner. REX has identified various indicators that should ensure a Filipino learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. Across these indicators, there is a common theme that encourages school culture and leadership to promote learners' physical and mental health, implement policies relevant to civic participation, and equip students with the essential competencies for lifelong learning. Families and communities are recognized as a major part of this advocacy, as the success of a child's education largely relies on the effective collaboration of stakeholders advocating for every learner's well-being.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon in support of UNODC standards

Based on the standards of UNODC, drug abuse prevention is a significant motivator for children, young adults, and adults to contribute positively in their families, schools, workplaces, and communities. Drug-abuse prevention at the school level focuses on the health and safety of children and youth, in a bid to encourage self-actualization that can lead to the realization of their full potential, prompting them to become productive members of society.

UNODC has found that developing a student's personal and social skills can prevent drug use and alcohol abuse. For children aged 10 and below, programs centered on improving resistance skills and self-control have been shown to reduce general problem behaviors in and out of the classroom. Several other factors can also influence the discouragement of substance abuse, such as students' academic performance, commitment to school, and social opportunities.

To achieve these benchmarks, REX designed BPE as a three-tier implementation framework that will allow schools to conduct systematic assessments of their progress in the UNODC's domains. BPE encourages schools to work with their stakeholders, students, parents, and community members in the planning and implementation of activities and interventions that are relevant to UNODC's standards.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon is an exemplary school-community-family program for drug abuse prevention

The BPE's pilot implementation allowed learners to learn about drug abuse prevention through the collaborative efforts of their teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders. In particular, parents reported feeling more engaged and knowledgeable of their children's school activities and priorities after participating in the BPE process.

The participating schools showed significant levels of involvement and support, having developed an appreciation for the BPE framework. REX intends to leverage this support in fine-tuning effective BPE advocacies, communications, and education initiatives for more schools across the nation.

In doing so, REX was able to complement UNODC's standards on drug-use prevention. Placing value in the partnership, emphasizing the importance of effective parenting, and delivering evidence-based prevention strategies proved to be the pillars that drove the success of BPE's initial launch. REX is committed to pushing BPE at a wider scale, in a bid to ensure children and youth become invulnerable and more resilient to drug use.
