Book Review: Heidi by Johanna Spyri

I’m excited to share a short review of the very first book I ever read, Heidi by Johanna Spyri.

This book is truly special to me, not only because of its beautiful story, but also because it was passed down to me from my mom, who had it when she was a child (my copy is now more than 50 years old) If I remember correctly, I must have been about 8 years old when she gave it to me, and it has always been one of my favorites.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri is a heartwarming story about a young girl who finds happiness in the Swiss Alps. Heidi is an orphan who is sent to live with her grandfather in the mountains. At first, her grandfather is grumpy and likes to be alone, but Heidi’s kindness helps him open up. As she gets to know the beautiful nature around her, she also becomes friends with a boy named Peter and a girl named Clara, who is sick and needs help.

The story is set in the Swiss Alps, and the author does a great job describing the beautiful mountains and simple village life. Heidi is a sweet, caring girl who loves her new life in the mountains. Even though things are difficult sometimes, she stays positive and helps the people around her. She helps her grandfather become happy again and helps Clara feel better by encouraging her to get out into nature.

Heidi teaches important lessons about kindness, friendship, and the healing power of nature. The story shows that even when life is hard, being kind to others and staying hopeful can make a big difference. The book also shows how beautiful and peaceful life can be in nature, away from the busy city.

Even though the story is from a long time ago, it still feels special today because of its messages about love and friendship.

Also, one thing that has always stuck with me from Heidi is when her aunt asked her to wear all her clothes at once so they wouldn't need to bring any luggage. (Talk about learning travel hacks. LOL)

Anyway, it is typically recommended for children ages 8 and up, but it can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Younger readers (around 8-10 years old) can appreciate the story if it’s read aloud to them or if they read it with some support, as the language can be a bit old-fashioned in places. Older readers, especially those around 10-12 years old, will likely find the book easier to read on their own and can dive deeper into its themes of kindness, nature, and family.

The story's gentle pace, wholesome messages, and vivid descriptions of nature also make it a great book for families to enjoy together. So, it’s perfect for both younger readers and adults who enjoy classic, heartwarming tales.

Important Tips for Visiting This Spring!

✔️ Check the Weather – Spring in Hong Kong is usually mild, but it can get rainy. Bring a light jacket and an umbrella just in case.

✔️ Buy Tickets in Advance – To save time, book your tickets and hotel online before your trip. Some special activities require advanced reservations, so plan ahead.

✔️ Arrive Early – The park can get busy, especially on weekends. Get there before opening time to enjoy more rides with shorter wait times.

✔️ Use the Disneyland App – The app helps you check ride wait times, show schedules, and dining options so you don’t miss anything.

✔️ Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks – Walking around all day can be tiring. Drink plenty of water and find shady spots to rest and recharge.

✔️ Bring a Portable Charger – You’ll be taking lots of photos and using the Disneyland app, so a portable charger will keep your phone powered up.
