When Grief Turned Me Into a Robot (And What Finally Let the Light Back In)

Losing my mom broke me in ways I never thought possible.

I used to believe I was strong and that I could hold it all together, keep showing up for work, for life. And I did... or at least, that’s what it looked like from the outside.

But behind closed doors, the reality was very different.

I was falling apart.

Grief showed up in quiet, haunting ways, not just through tears, but in nightmares that left me gasping for air, in panic I couldn’t explain, and in a silence so loud it swallowed me whole. For more than a year, I shut down emotionally. I was alive, but not really living.

They call it functional depression. I was working, responding to emails, ticking off to-do lists. But it was all mechanical as if I’d turned into a robot. I did what I had to do, but the spark was gone. And when the world went to sleep, that’s when grief came to visit. The nights were the hardest. That’s when the weight pressed the heaviest, and the nightmares crept in, drowning me in waves of sorrow I didn’t know how to process.

I stopped going out. Slowly, without even realizing it, I started to retreat from the world.

The doors and windows in our home were shut almost all the time, like a physical reflection of what was going on inside me. I didn’t want to see the world, and I didn’t want it to see me. My husband, Val, ever patient and kind, would prepare our meals and bring them upstairs. I barely left the room. I stayed glued to my computer, working late into the night until I was too exhausted to dream.

It became a cycle.
Wake up. Work. Shut down. Repeat.

I told myself I was surviving one day at a time. But deep down, I knew something had to change. I wasn’t healing. I was stuck in a house and a life that had become a constant reminder of what I had lost.

So last month, we made a hard but necessary decision:
We moved.

A new house. A new space. A chance to begin again, even just a little.

This wasn’t about running from grief. Grief follows you. It lives in your bones. But maybe, just maybe, I could give myself space to breathe. To reset. To find moments of stillness without being swallowed by pain.

And today for the first time in 20 months, something shifted.

I woke up early.
I opened the windows. I opened the doors.

And for the first time in a long time, the light came in.

The living room wasn’t gloomy anymore. It looked warm. It looked alive. The air smelled different -  lighter, hopeful, new.

Val, with his background in psychology, once shared with me the House-Tree-Person (HTP) assessment, a tool used in therapy to explore someone’s inner world. He told me how in this study, the way someone draws doors and windows in a house says a lot about their emotional state. Closed doors can symbolize fear, isolation, and trauma. But open ones? They mean safety. Openness. A willingness to connect and begin again.

So here we are, in a new home with our doors and windows open.
And somehow, it really does mean something.

Today, I cried.
But this time, the tears were different.

They weren’t from grief, but from a quiet kind of joy, the kind that comes when you finally feel a little bit of yourself coming back.

Because I’ve come to understand something:
Grief doesn’t go away.
Healing isn’t about forgetting the people we’ve lost.
It’s about learning to carry them with us with love, not just pain.

We continue to love them not in the past tense, but in the everyday.
In the sunlight.
In the open windows.
In every small decision to live again.

One day at a time.

The Secret to Great Crabs (and Life)

Let me share a simple story that reminded me how far kindness and connection can go — even in places as everyday as a paluto station.

A few days ago, I ordered a tray of crabs for a dear friend’s birthday.

When I placed the order, I just gently mentioned —
"Kuya, kon pwede lang bala, may alimango na may madaming aligue? Favorite gid namo."

I wasn’t demanding.
Just letting them know, nicely, what we hoped for. And he didn’t say much — just nodded, smiled, and got to work.

Viola! We were served 15 pieces. All female crabs.
Madaming aligue.
No fuss. No extra charge. Just quiet generosity.

Fast forward to our next visit.
I glanced at the aquarium and noticed: puro male crabs na lang natira.
I was about to ask when Kuya looked at me and said, with a smile:

“Ma’am, kuhaan ta ka diri sa bag-ong delivery.”

I didn’t even need to remind him.
He just remembered.

That moment stayed with me — because it wasn’t about getting what I wanted.
It was about how, sometimes, when you speak with kindness, people really listen.
And they remember.

HUMAN CONNECTION is greater than any life hack. It goes beyond what automation and AI can do.

Be nice. Tip if you can. Look people in the eye. Say thank you like you mean it.

Because kindness won’t just feed your soul — it might also bless you with the most unholy, high-cholesterol, serotonin-packed crab of your dreams.

Catching a Flight? Lounge muna! Our Plaza Premium Lounge Experience in Cebu (Domestic Terminal)

So here’s the thing—we were flying from Cebu to Bacolod with my kuya’s Xbox complete with steering wheel and other accessories in tow. Yes, an Xbox as hand-carry. Just imagine the curious looks.

Because of our rather unusual luggage, we decided to arrive at the airport earlier than usual just to be safe. And true enough, our bags were flagged at the scanner and went through manual inspection. Buti na lang, the process was quick and smooth. 🙌

The result? We were very early for our flight and suddenly had a lot of time on our hands. And let’s be real—we didn’t feel like spending two hours sitting on cold metal airport seats, hugging our bags, and pretending we weren’t getting hungry. Then we remembered...

Plaza Premium Lounge is right inside the domestic terminal. YES!
We had our Mastercard Travel Pass (one of our credit card perks), plenty of time, and the perfect excuse to treat ourselves. So off we went!

Where to Find It

You’ll find the lounge inside Terminal 1, just past security and before the boarding gates. There’s a dedicated elevator going down, and once you exit—voilà! You’re there. Super convenient and no need to walk far.

First Impressions

It’s not massive, but the space is well-designed and doesn’t feel cramped.
There’s a comfy mix of lounge chairs, café-style tables, and even work-friendly spots complete with charging outlets. The lighting is warm (aka flattering for selfies 😉), and the interiors are modern and clean.

Definitely way better than fighting for a seat by the charging station near the gate.

Let’s Talk Food—Because of Course We Are

This isn’t our first time at Plaza Premium, so we already knew the food was going to be legit good. But we still got excited seeing the spread.

Let’s start with a hidden gem:
👉 Their pork humba. Not on the buffet table—but all you have to do is ask the chef, and they’ll gladly serve you a generous portion. Pair it with boiled eggs (also available on request), and you’ve got yourself a satisfying meal.

Also worth trying:
🍜 Chicken noodle soup (ask for it!)
🍚 Congee with toppings
🥗 Salad station
🍝 Pasta and pancit
🍖 Other meat dishes
🍉 Fresh fruits, snacks, and desserts

And of course—unlimited drinks: coffee, tea, juice, and sodas. No stingy portions here. Everything was warm, well-stocked, and most importantly—masarap!

This is miles better than sad sandwiches or soggy airport fast food. Promise.

Showers, Wi-Fi & Other Perks

We didn’t get to try the shower rooms this time, but yes—they have them. Clean, private, and ready if you need a quick refresh before flying.

Wi-Fi was fast and reliable (we managed to scroll, upload, and check updates without a hitch). There were also lots of charging ports, so no more awkwardly hovering near someone else’s plug. 😂

Worth it ba?

Absolutely.

Instead of dreading a long wait, it felt like we got a mini staycation inside the airport. Good food, comfy seats, strong Wi-Fi, aircon, and actual peace and quiet—sulit.
